WOW, very nice. Where did you get your cone bottom tank?

WOW, very nice. Where did you get your cone bottom tank? My son and I made it. we took 2 55 gal. drums, cut triangles out of one end and wleded them together on the other drum.

I saw it in person. Again nice work! I don't have a welder or anything so I bought a 35 gal cone bottom tank. Going to have it up and running soon. I was quoted $300 from a local welder here to make one like yours.

Wow, I never thought of that. I was planning on attempting to re-invent the wheel. This is brilliant. I bet you could get 2-3 cones out of one barrel if you tried hard enough. I hope you don't mind, but I was thinking of stealing our idea? Well I have a welder and the knowledge to weld on these thin barrels, so I was thinking of making a few extras if anyone is interested. Depending on time, it might be a month before I have any ready. E-mail me if you're interested: andrew_christina (at) sbcglobal (dot) net Basically, I'd charge you the price of two barrels or $? total for one cone barrel. Oh, and that would be for a 55 gallon, I don't have a source or need for 35 gallon versions, so if you want smaller ones we'll have to work out a deal.

No problem on "stealing the idea". I will say it is harder than it sounds to make the triangles work correctly. Because the drum is round, they don't want to bend correctly. Also, in order to get the sides of the triangles welded, i had to fill some gaps. Not a big problem since i have a TIG machine, but a problem none-the-less. Also, after i got the "cone" welded together, the diameter of thecone was a bit smaller than the diameter of the barrel. Nothing that can't be overcome, but, I advise you build one before you quote a price. I had about 10-12 hours in that one. I for one am not sure that I would go that route again. I think I might opt for the method on JTF.
YMMV

LOL, I understand the problems involved and plan on cheating. I have a 3D modeling program that I can work out the exact geometry for the "triangles" and I plan on leaving about 1" to 2" of the original barrel which I'm cutting the triangles from to weld on to the other full barrel. Basically, make a skirt for the full barrel.
I have a lot of experience with welding large gaps with thin metal (exhaust work) and think I can do your design in 10-12 hours (not including the 3D modeling stuff) for the first one, then kind of get a pattern going to the rest.

I'd like one but it's too much to ask of anyone. I also bought the plastic cone tank already and will be putting it to use soon.

LOL, sorry about that . Man, if I can get the pattern down and work out the templates it'd be a matter of minutes to a couple of hours to cut one out, bend down the triangles and run a few weld beads to seal it up and add a pipe to the bottom for drainage. I'm thinking after the engineering and prototype is done I could make one in no time. If you want one and are willing to wait a little while, I'll get you one at the price quoted above (anything to help out fellow BDers).

I would be interested in getting some. Anyone have some already made?

Actually, I should be able to get the 3D molding for the design finished today and might have the prototype finished by next weekend.

Update on the cone bottom tanks... I have the drawings done, I'm just going to run a few more calculations to help me determine the fastest way to reproduce these bad boys.
Anyone whom has e-mailed me before this post will get the special e-mail price, anyone coming through the forums will get the special BDer's price of $xx (to be determined).
Included will be a 55 gallon steel closed top drum (an open top can be used if you want. let me know before ordering) fitted with a cone bottom. At the very bottom of the cone will be a 1" nipple (3/4" can be used if you want) and the entire thing will be sitting on legs with the bottom of the nipple at 18" A.F.F. (higher or lower can be specified if you know what height you want) I will post a link for a crude 2D drawing and will post back with more information once the prototype is finished.

Update...
Ok, I have the 3D design all worked out and plan on making the cardboard templates this weekend (though we have lots of little girl b-day parties to go to). I'll keep everyone posted.
