I found a source for KOH here in Dallas that I think is pretty cheap. The name of the place is Taylored Concepts Candle Supplies. Their phone number is (972)671-5661. Their website is www.tayloredconcepts.comI spoke to Robert (Owner) and he quoted me this price. 50lbs = $45 You have to pick it up though. He won't ship it. He is supposed to have 90% flakes.

I went by and picked up a bag of the KOH today. 50lb bag, is about the size of feed bag, or for you city guys, about the size of large pillow. ;D I talked to Robert while I was there, and he was very nice and helpful. I asked him about keeping it in a bucket to keep it dry, and he said a couple of things I thought others might be interested in; First, he said that it is more of a problem keeping it "dry" in summer, rather than winter. I told him I thought it would be the opposite, but he insisted. He said just to keep the bag drawn shut and that would be good enough. Second, he said even if it did "get wet", or absorb moisture, all it would do would be to clump together. It would not change anything and would work just the same. I think, chemically, that is true. I do wonder if it would absorb enough moisture to throw the weight off for our purposes. I don't think it would absorb enough moisture to that the moisture itself would harm our reactions, unless it was just dripping wet (just my opinion ) One other thing, a small convienence to them: Call ahead and tell them you are comeing. They have a small front, and large warehouse type operation. I showed up and paid, and had to wait about 20 min. while they got to my order, and went back and pulled it. I drove around back to the loading dock to pick it up. and.... They generate empty 55 gal. drums. I saw several drums there and asked, Robert said they just call a recycler and he comes and picks them up. He said if anybody wants some when the pick up chemicals, just ask. I got the impression that they would be free to customers. But don't hold me to that. Scott

I picked up a bag of KOH today, Robert is a great guy and he said for all of you to come on by, he has about 50-60 bags left. Also said he would not run out, when stock gets low he will order more And.... The drums are FREE!!! ;D (contained scents for candle making) mine used to have cinammon scent in it LOL. I saw 8 or 10 drums, of course I took one of them. Shoulda took 2. Forgot to mention I called ahead and told them I was coming, but I still had to wait behind all the ladies purchasing candle making supplies.

Well, I finally went by and met Robert and got some KOH. He is a really nice guy and I timed it perfectly. He even gave me 10 gallons of peanut oil he was going to throw away. I guess he fried some turkeys for Christmas. I even picked up some barrels (Apricot & Cinnamon for those interested). Guess I can say I scored!

It seems everyone is trying to find ways to store KOH. Well I picked some up today. They messed up and brought me 3lbs instead of 15 so i waited and waited. Anyways if they sell them by the pound why are you guys buying 50lbs bags? Just get enough to last you for a lil while and go buy some more. No need for long term storage. The cost is the same by the pound.

50 lbs don't last very long and it stays dry in those buckets with lids that lowes and home depot for paint i think, white 5 gal buckets - 25lbs will fit in one bucket. Miles

Miles Good thing I'm not making it often Oh I noticed that KOH produces hotter temps and when I was measuring KOH on my scale I can feel it eating at my arms. I didn't feel the itch when using the regular stuff.

Only time I noticed the KOH toxicity is when I got a lung full of it filling buckets, some nasty stuff but I think my lung cancer is cured now LOL!!!

Just trying to confirm the purity of the flake KOH from Taylor. I'm assuming it's 90%. It's manufactured by Ashta and I didn't see any purity reference on the bag. Here's the product specification from the web site. www.ashtachemicals.com/products/fkohfs.htmTotal Alkalinity as Weight % KOH = 90.0 Min. I'm assuming this means 90% pure?
